In response to Caroline Farrow: Tough questions that expose how Amnesty has been hijacked by the right-on left, Groan wrote:
Some years ago I stopped supporting Amnesty due to its changing focus from its support of prisoners in defence of human rights to adopting such causes. Not because I didn’t support some of them but because Amnesty, I thought, should stand for the person and their rights against tyranny even if one didn’t agree with the person.
What one saw (and it appears to have moved apace according to this article) was the development of a hierarchy of support according to “isms” rather than the grossness of the tyranny. Unless pro or anti-abortionists are tortured or imprisoned by a tyrannical state ignoring their rights then abortion as an issue is for the organisations who campaign.
These days Amnesty mis-represent themselves. There are other groups who genuinely stand for people’s rights to fair treatment and I support these.
