Reader’s Comment of the Day: EU referendum is an establishment stitch-up

In response to Laurence Hodge: The ascendancy of the Right could be shipwrecked by Europe, Simonstephenson wrote:

“And if the last election result has shown us nothing else, it has shown that voters can tell a fudge and a stitch-up when they see one, so a sleight of hand, however charmingly executed, probably won’t wash.”

Of course a sleight of hand will work, because this is the entirety of what modern electoral politics consists of. Because they have the entire establishment behind them, Mr Cameron and his entourage already know that, if they choose to, they will win a “Stay-In” vote – and, of course, they will choose to.

At least three quarters of the electorate will only vote for what at least an element of the establishment supports, and as none of the establishment will support EU exit, there’s no chance of an anti-EU vote winning.

This is the reality. The only way we’ll be leaving the EU is if the whole edifice collapses.
