Good article. The Tim Hunt take down is a disgraceful episode. I think it was a landmark.
“…wakes up one day to find they agree with pretty much everything Peter Hitchens has ever written…” Agreed ;-)
Nick Cohen wrote a book called “What’s Left” that demolished the Left’s legalism and phoney internationalism from the inside. But it has to be said the Left still advances. George Osborne said this week “we are the party of the progressive centre” and not a murmur in the Conservative Party. The “centre” is of course on the left.
A huge change swept through the Left in the 1980s deindustrialisation and with it the death knell of the white male skilled factory breadwinner, who was the bastion of trade union power, a Labour voter and socially conservative. Those white men at TUC and party conferences kept the party grounded and restrained the rainbow coalition. Let loose the Left got the label loony.
The social justice warriors (SJWs) and occasional trolls who come on this site are the descendants of that loony fringe. In the 1980s they would have attended public meetings and would have had to develop arguments.
As it is they actually think they know what they are talking about, repeating old tired arguments that were unconvincing 30 years ago.
The 1980s hard left had a no platform for fascists position for the National Front because they were rightly afraid of what they would do if they got into power.
Todays SJWs have a no platform, job, career for anyone else.
As Donald Rumsfeld said: “They don’t know what they don’t know.” And they don’t care.
