In response to, Kathy Gyngell: Is our last conservative commentator Peter Hitchens really on holiday, Callingallcomets wrote:
From the moment in early 2013 when Ukip became a serious political force, the Daily Mail did its level best to denigrate and ridicule the party. It willingly acted as a conduit for Tory HQ’s smears and made little, if any, attempt to find out why millions of ordinary folk were taking an interest in what Ukip had to say.
I constantly recall the phrases…Ukip was “reeling from yet another blow to its credibility”, was “again mired in controversy” was “facing another barrage of criticism”…Yet, oddly enough, Ukip support did not melt away. It does say something when, at times, The Guardian appeared more balanced in its treatment of Farage and his members than Paul Dacre’s Mail.
I think the possible defenestration of Hitchens mirrors this shift to a more metropolitan viewpoint. Certainly a number of former Mirror hacks have been recruited in addition to the odious champagne radical Piers Morgan. How can the trenchant and deeply uncool utterances of Hitchens fit into that sort of template?
His only route to salvation if he wishes to remain at The Mail on Sunday would be to have an affair with Kim Kardashian…
