In response to Rob Slane: What would sensible Jane Austen make of Dave’s gay marriage nonsense?, The_greyhound wrote:
I never cared for Jane Austen. I’m afraid that her gaze seldom rises above the navel : the tinkling teacups and the social chitchat are mere sublimation of her urgent thrusting preoccupation with coupling. To that extent I think she would be delighted with the possibilities, ambiguities and abundant nonsense of Mr Cameron’s marriage à-la-mode.
So much so that one can see Cameron and Austen disappearing off together into the garden, a pair of garrulous old hens, all lorgnettes and flounces, twittering their metrosexual nonsense as they go.
