A really thoughtful and thought provoking article. Of course, there was an attempt to create a social democratic party in the UK – the SDP, but it came to nought. I doubt the Blairites will try that again – a better approach would be to purge the Labour Party of its lunatics, but they comprise about 40 per cent of the party, so it would take real courage.
Kinnock tried but it did him no good and Blair thought he had cracked it, but Blairism was nothing more than walnut veneer over the unreconstructed dogwood of real labour.
Part of the problem for Labour is that it has a Soviet era, “Hampstead” intelligentsia, stuck in a 1940s, Stalinist timewarp, who actually hate the best values of their own country – Owen Jones typifies this brand of left wing idiocy – he would rather cuddle up to Sinn Fein, Hamas and the party of Hugo Chavez, than work for the real and genuine interests of the people of this country.
