It is certain that, on the morning following an ‘out’ vote, the CEOs of BMW, Mercedes, VW, Bosch and more would be breaking Chancellor Merkel’s door down, demanding a serious negotiation to keep their biggest European market ‘in’.
That is when we would, via a new PM, demand terms we like. They would include a return to the Common Market, UK parliamentary sovereignty and reduced financial contributions – and no Norway/Switzerland-style kowtowing. No more ‘ever-closer union’. No more ‘free movement of people’.
Then we’d be back to the useful and sensible arrangement of 1975, trading as part of the EU but not enmeshed in it, which served us well in its time. It could do so again.
