Britain’s public schools are flourishing because they are Independent of the dead hand of government and the educational establishment. Here’s a clue; they refer to themselves as “Independent” schools. By being independent the schools can decide for themselves how best to operate.
A party that aspires to win an election outright should offer every British child the chance to go to an independent school. Let the parent decide whether their child would be better off learning Latin or metalwork, and give each child a grant to pay for his schooling. Make the customer king – that’s “child centred”. Allow good tech schools or German-style realschules to be sponsored by local industries and churches. Have schools run by governors and headmasters. And sack the Minister of Education.
