Reader’s Comment of the Day: Social media undermines the private realm of friendship

-

In response to, Stella Morabito: Only connect to fight back against the PC tyranny, Damaris Tighe wrote:

The bonds of friends and family can resist authoritarianism by creating private nests of independent thought. That’s why the old communist regimes and the newer cultural Marxists try to undermine them by engineering family breakdown and encouraging people to denounce their friends. Modern denouncing operates via ‘defriending’ on social media. And children indoctrinated at school often ‘denounce’ their parents in conversations at home.

The views of ordinary people have no real public representation and it’s increasingly difficult for them to express their views in private – the formerly private realm of friendship has become public through social media and the family has increasingly become simply a mother-child duo (no threat to the movers and shakers there).
