In response to, Kathy Gyngell: Is Gove Ukip’s secret weapon? That’s what his Marxist nonsense about the ‘undeserving rich’ suggests, Oliver J.S McMullen wrote:

“Who exactly, I would like to know, are the deserving rich?”

Exactly. But why is this uselessness a surprise? Because the Tories have never had an ideology, they were open to being led by the nose by those that have. I read somewhere that the Fabians always planned to take over the Tory party. They appear to have succeeded. Now the Tories have become everything they were fundamentally supposed to oppose.

But Michael Gove is just being populist – blowing in what he thinks is the prevailing wind. I suspect he doesn’t actually believe a word he says. This is just bog standard politics of envy – the enemy of aspiration. And you are right, of course, it won’t work. Those for whom the politics of envy floats their boat already have at least four parties of the openly declared progressive left – Labour, the Lib Dems, the Greens, and the SNP in Scotland. Mr Gove’s guff is just more of the desperate thrashings of a dying party.
