Orwell understood this only too well. People working in the public services can already be sent on ‘re-education’ courses (AKA ‘diversity’ or ‘inclusiveness’ courses) to imbue them with ‘correct’ thoughts. In the Soviet Union, after Stalin, in the 1970s and 1980s, dissidents were sent to psychiatric prisons, where they were injected with drugs to rid them of incorrect ideas (Stalin had a brusquer method – a bullet in the back of the head in the Lubianka or 10 – 15 years slaving in the Gulags).
