Reader’s Comment: Our elites believe five impossible things before breakfast

-

In response to Andrew Cadman: The Brexit debate has exposed the grandiose delusions of our ruling elites, simonstephenson wrote:

Every day brings yet more examples of the insidious creep towards a world in which reason and logic are turned on their heads as supposedly well-educated and intelligent people produce arguments where the evidence set out is selected and constructed so as to be consistent with preformed conclusions, as opposed to the properly intellectual and reasoned method in which the conclusions are what are consistent with the entirety of the evidence.

The modern elites are anti-Enlightenment to a man (and to a woman), having convinced themselves instead that the epitome of intellectual competence is to nail ones colours to a strand of elite groupthink, and then spend the rest of one’s life seeking fallacious arguments and cherry-picked information so as to produce more and more arcane and tortured support for one’s set-in-concrete beliefs. Beliefs that, in truth, are only latched onto in the first place because of the thought that they made one look big to the people that mattered at the time.
