I’m still puzzled that throughout 40 years of British membership during which the EU was constantly derided for its meddling, incompetence, arrogance and lack of accountability, no one was aware of the deep and abiding love that it inspired in the hearts of so many people who are now devastated by Brexit.
Was it a love that dared not speak its name in the face of ignorant, lowbrow intolerance or a Panglossian assumption that such a superior mode of ordering society was unassailable.
Where were they all, for example, at the European Parliament elections, an ideal opportunity to show solidarity on behalf of a treasured ideal? Hardly anybody voted and if they did it was for reasons that had nothing to do with the EU. Instead, they nursed their love in silence like the medieval soupirants of unattainable court ladies.
Now it’s too late and they’re reduced to inventing stories about how their broken hearts are upsetting the kiddies. Strange people.
