A fair article. But it omits another truth: that sometimes, in fact quite often, a political journey becomes so slow-motion and bogged down that it never reaches its supposed destination at all. I suspect that by 2040, the EU from which we are supposedly extricating ourselves (and to which we may well still be joined in some respects) will be a very different creature from today. In fact it may well have imploded completely, its collapse driven by far more vigorous energies than those expended by our own dismal and moribund government.
