The obvious reaction from parents is to boycott Scouts, Guides etc. But as I hinted in the Army thread yesterday, there is a subtle but growing pressure from schools to make parents feel obliged to sign their children up to some sort of ‘uniformed group’, and of course the children want to ‘fit in’. The agenda is to destroy the old grassroots groups and replace them with state-controlled ones. The heavily subsidised National Citizenship Scheme is the one to watch.
It is not yet compulsory but there are all sorts of levels starting with primary school, free and just needing parental permission, and then a two-week residential for sixteen-year-olds, only £50 per head thanks to the taxpayer . . . My prediction is that it will gradually become the standard post-GCSE activity and that anybody not taking part will be ostracised and marked down on job applications/have a file held in MI5 etc.
