In response to Kathy Gyngell: Cherie Blair steps up her cruel vendetta against mothers and fathers, GreatScot wrote:
Many years ago, our economic model of ever increasing GDP hit a wall. A decision was made that wives and mothers needed to work, house prices were inflated, debt was encouraged, credit cards, store cards, catalogues, mortgages at 5 x salary, bank loans. To get a credit rating you had to have debt. Consumerism was pushed, you want it, get it, get it now. An inevitable consequence was the abandonment of family life, children dumped to facilitate the servicing of debt. Generalising, children are no longer cherished and nurtured as they once were. I am proud to say my wife refused to follow the herd and took a 10-year career break to raise our children, working herself back into fullime employment slowly thereafter.
As an aside, another consequence of both parents needing to work full time is the decreasing birth rates in the U.K. The economic model of ever increasing GDP is still being pursued, therefore the only solution now that we are all already working and drowning in debt is to increase the population via immigration.
