The euro provided a level playing field whereby German efficiency and work ethic could then trump everything else, and to an extent that is how it works.
What they did not factor in was just how appallingly badly run all the other countries were when they did not have their own currencies to hide behind.
Germany needs us much, much more than we need them, that is basic economics. Please Google “Italian banking crises 2016” if you want to see what is keeping German bankers up at night: two trillion euros of debt and going up.
