Reader’s comment: The silver-spoon rebels

In response to Robert James: Don’t complain about the culture war, Mr Fry – you started it, michelle wrote:

One of the best pieces I’ve read in a while. It absolutely nails the supposed comedians of the 80s era.

To me, most of that set seemed to be from what I would have called the middle, middle class. They had been given full advantage of everything built over centuries. Many were university educated, and coining it in, whilst at the same time slagging off anyone else who worked hard and raised themselves. I recall much being made of those born with silver spoons, as if anyone can help what they are born into. Yet to me, coming from a council estate with little money in the family pot, they seemed to have a very large silver spoon.
They were supposed to be talking the talk I could understand, yet I couldn’t. In fact I found them boringly repetitive, and would such as Ben Elton even have a career in comedy had ‘Thatch’ not come along, not that I was particularly enamoured by her, but I just saw their hypocrisy.

I don’t think I’d lose much money if I were to bet on nearly all of them being Labour supporters, and all with an insatiable appetite to tear down the system that kept them safe and had supported and enabled their comfortable upbringing. Stupid bored rich kids wanting to rebel against their privileges is how I saw them. A stage most grow out of, these sort never did, it paid too well, and they really are not very intelligent people anyway, that requires independent thought, you can’t buy that.

They were instrumental in ushering in some of the debased and vulgar things that pass as entertainment. I’m no Mary Whitehouse, but it seems absolutely no one can get a laugh any more unless they swear, or use explicit sexual innuendo.

Where are most of these types now? Do they live in the multi-racial/cultural places they so keenly supported? Hell would freeze over first I think.

They are now all looking behind them, and seeing everything they pushed for closing in on them and they don’t like it. What is more I think some of them are smart enough to know that they will find no friends among those of opposing views that they helped persecute over the years, and like all useful idiots many of those from the ethnic minority groups they patronised won’t want them either. In fact certain ones will look upon them as disgusting.

I think as the backlash grows against everything this country has become to its detriment, we will see more of this type trying to excuse themselves, and hitch their wagons to the culture revival. The culture that gave them everything, but they were too stupid to appreciate.
