I can’t believe how pointless Dan Snow’s lie is. Now he’s going to have to be telling the same lie to his children all the time: female hussars at Waterloo, female auxiliaries at Vindolanda, jolly Jill-tars in Nelson’s navy. Then there was that Nelly Armstrong, first on the moon, and don’t forget the six transgendered husbands of Henry VIII.

There are plenty of interesting women in history, but you do have to dig a bit to find out about some of them. Inventing ones who didn’t exist is not something a genuine historian would do.
