I’d suggest Boris’s quip is being taken seriously because he represents a threat to the establishment who favour curtailing our imminent departure from the EU, which would likely see Britain repositioning itself in the Anglosphere alongside Donald Trump, himself hardly an agitator for Sharia law. Islamophobia is the latest, rather pathetic, confected pretext.
A quick look at the ongoing internecine struggle between Islam’s two most powerful states, Saudi Arabia and Iran, with their proxy wars in Syria, Yemen and beyond, would indicate that it’s rather more preoccupied with mutually assured destruction over and above converting the likes of you and me.
