Rather than selection by ability, we now have selection by house price and how well educated a child’s parents are in terms of meeting the entry requirements for the top performing comprehensives.

Look at how difficult it is to get your child into schools – which are notionally comprehensive – the likes of Michael Gove sends his children to. The funny thing is that the top comprehensives are far more socially elitist than grammar schools were – where a child’s education was based upon his/her academic ability alone.
