This election has given the Conservative Party the chance to finally expunge the vitriol heaped on it for being elitist and only serving the rich and South East. Let us hope they don’t throw it away by delivering BRINO and not investing in anything that doesn’t benefit those inside the M25. If the Tories fail to deliver, they will be back in the wilderness and those wearing a blue rosette will again be unwelcome in large parts of the country. I take comfort from the fact that people were writing the same things about Trump in 2016 – on his showing to that date, he had seemed to be broadly left of centre and many expected that to continue. But he clearly realised his historical position and the expectation of many that he would redress severe imbalances, and he has performed in a big way. There is reason to hope Boris will have the same grasp of this pivotal moment on this side of the pond.
