Readers’ comments: Negotiate, but there will be no deal

-

In response to Timothy Bradshaw: TCW’s Brexit Watch,

There will be no deal. The French want our fish, so they will not sign any deal that is acceptable to the UK. EU + 27/28 = NoDeal. Negotiate away, but prepare to leave #NoDeal.

ibnezraster replied:

True. The suggestion that the EU might possibly fold if Italy walks out before Dec 31 needs to be pondered. It means that any EU-UK ‘deal’ must be prefaced with a contractual clause giving default positions if the EU no longer exists. The clause must say what the relationships would default to and how each of the 27 states will trade with the UK on WTO terms. And that means Sedwill must now restart no deal preparations, IF he is in truth a civil servant loyal to Britain and preparing for all possiblities. So far Whitehall has NOT done that as Project Fear demonstrates still.

Yes, but Johnson kept him on! Why?

Johnson has caved to the establishment view on every major issue to date, and is now genuflecting to the NHS. The Big State is winning, let’s face it. Frankly, we might as well replace Johnson with Starmer in 2024, for all the difference it will make.
