ROLF Norfolk’s Saturday essay, Brexit and the last days of democracy, brought this response from Partisan:
The simple and undeniable fact is that if you betray Brexit and democracy, our ONLY non-violent means of governing ourselves, then by default you legitimise political violence. Take away democracy as they are doing now meaning VOTING is pointless; that leaves either totalitarianism (the EU) or violent anarchy. If the people lose faith in our democratic system, are those politicians, europhiles, quislings and traitors prepared and willing to face the consequences of their actions?
and this interesting observation from Dave S:
I have heard greater hostility now towards the EU 27 than I ever heard towards the Cold War USSR. Then we assumed the Russian people were as caught up in it as us and were not personally our enemies. Now things are different. There is a real dislike of the continent and its people around. This is directly attributable to our leaders failing to really accept the vote and the same class in the EU failing to ensure that our departure was speedily and sensibly done. The two classes have thus colluded at the expense of the voters. Which is how it looks to many of us.
and from Oaknash:
Well said, Rolf – we are certainly standing on a ‘cliff edge’, but not the one the massed forces of ‘remain’ imagined or obsess about.
These rich, spoiled, naive and selfish ‘children’ think they are getting their own way because they are cleverer, richer and more deserving than the rest of us, but they are playing with fire.
The bottom line is that in their desperation to maintain their own personal economic advantage, they have willingly jettisoned all the accepted democratic conventions that have kept the peace for generations in order to force their own way on the majority. They have undermined respect for the accepted order and only chaos can follow, as others less accepting of democracy will use this to their advantage.
You spit in people’s faces enough and eventually you get punched in the face yourself. Let’s hope they are ready for what happens next.
They have sown the wind, but unfortunately all of us will reap the whirlwind. Let’s hope they are pleased with themselves.
Julia Hartley-Brewer’s nomination for our Brexit Roll of Honour proved a very popular choice. She rightly received one endorsement after another.
daviebob commented:
If T May is the devil incarnate, Julia H-Brewer is a guiding angel. She is bright, intelligent, witty, clear-minded, principled and knows exactly how to give short shrift to any PC nonsense. She is just about the only radio I can listen to without exploding with anger over left-wing guff. Ladies like Julia are why this country has been so great for so long. Alas we are now very short of them.
Abominable_Yeoman agreed:
JHB is a woman to admire. Brave, honest, intelligent, forthright and witty. Her show is succour for the aural abuse inflicted on us by the beeb.
Is there an equivalent female character on the Remain side? Or even on the whole of the Left?
I can’t think of one.
Margaret Ashworth’s brilliant Lost BBC series – this time focusing on the post-war Family Favourites programme – is proving the perfect antidote to the political and social chaos around us. As Chingford Gal wrote:
Sheer bliss going down memory lane with you, Margaret . . . Nat King Cole sublime! Thank you.
The rest of us at TCW couldn’t agree more.
