AS A cinephile, I watch movies in many genres. Having seen the not-so-great Bohemian Rhapsody, I was hoping that Rocketman would be a better musical biopic. By all accounts and reviews, it is. But I won’t be placing royalties into Executive Producer Elton John’s pocket. For, like so many others such as Ian McEwan, Michael Sheen and Steve Coogan who are omniscient in all things Brexit, Elton has joined the sneering throng of Europhiles.
Last week, during his farewell ‘Yellow Brick Road’ tour, he said: ‘I’m ashamed of my country for what it has done. It’s torn people apart . . . I am sick to death of politicians, especially British politicians. I am sick to death of Brexit. I am a European. I am not a stupid, colonial, imperialist English idiot.’
I too am not a colonialist, nor imperialist, nor stupid. I voted for a United Kingdom to have its own sovereignty and democracy, to make its own laws and bring in immigrant workers from the countries that we wish to choose from.
Rather than being ashamed of the UK, Elton John should celebrate the fact the British people are among the most tolerant within the EU.
As for the mindset of being imperialist, I find the irony of Sir Elton John accepting a knighthood rather striking!
