TCW Hero of the Week
Senior civil servant Mark Sedwill took our bloated international aid budget by the scruff of the neck this week when he ordered a review to stop our cash being wasted. Sedwill told senior ministers that they needed to get rid of mistakes and ensure the aid provides “value for money” for taxpayers when it is spent on potential security issues and helping nations in conflict zones. This welcome news came after it emerged that the Government has been funnelling £1.9 billion a year of overseas aid to countries with dire human rights records such as Zimbabwe and Egypt. I know we would rather see DFID mothballed, but this effort a decent start.
TCW Villain of the Week
University vice-chancellors and their moaning were amplified this week when one of their number said that despite vice-chancellor pay being as high as £500,000, they need to be paid more. Professor Paul Holmes, who we profiled on TCW earlier this week, a former Labour adviser and vice-chancellor of Bolton ‘University’ said that his £222,000 salary was not enough despite owning a Rolls Royce and a 30ft yacht. It apparently mattered little that his ‘university’ is one of the worst in the country. The sooner this bloated bubble bursts, the better.
