Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, infamously said last month that there has to be a special place in hell for those who promoted Brexit without having ‘even a sketch of a plan’ for how to deliver it.
The MSM were outraged but Mr Tusk was more correct than they realised. Top of his list should have been Theresa May for a Withdrawal Agreement that is not a plan for exit at all. The one she is shamelessly persisting in trying to entrap and wear down otherwise principled Brexiteers into final agreement on; the one that is not a path to Brexit, not a trade deal, just ‘the way to being weakened and degraded for two years’ and to having ‘negotiations’ for any deal at all ‘shaped and conditioned by EU alignments’.
This deceit is what makes Mrs May, the arch-imposer of false choices, so shameless and appalling.
Her final and utterly cynical threat yesterday: Back my Brexit or We Will Never Leave – more reminiscent of Wackford Squeers of Dotheboys Hall than a woman who thinks like a head prefect – reserved her, if not a place in hell, a special place all of her own on our wall of shame.
