WHAT has particularly shocked me over the Freedom Convoy protest has been the mainstream media’s attitude towards it. First they ignored it, then when they felt they could no longer remain silent they at best reported it from a Canadian government perspective or at worst demonised it. Only latterly have we seen anything like normal reporting from Mail Online or the Independent’s so-called ‘live’ coverage.
But have any of them sent a reporter to Ottawa? Perhaps Fergal Keane to talk to the besieged truckers and set-upon protesters? Not as far as I can see. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I have relied on Fox News as one of the very few mainstream outlets (if not the only one) regularly reporting from the ground. They have been updating us daily on what happened since the Ottawa police edict of February 16 for the truckers to get out, when they were handed flyers telling them they were committing a criminal offence if they didn’t leave.
Here is their compilation of interviews with truckers on their response to the edict, the real men of Frank Wright’s TCW article yesterday. Their resilience, attitude and thorough decency is remarkable. They are prepared to lose all, and some already have.
In response to the truckers’ determination, on Friday the police moved in on them and protesters in Central Ottawa with a vengeance, described here by Ezra Levant in what he called Canada’s darkest day.
What since? What of the men making up Canada’s police force? Is their heart really in it? From this latest Fox News report (as of Saturday) it seems doubtful. And the good news is that the Trucker peaceful resistance is not being beaten down. Trudeau, however repressive and cruel, has not won.
However last week’s shocking arrest and imprisonment of the ‘rebel pastor’ Artur Pawlowski, the Polish-Canadian Protestant street preacher and political activist who was denied bail for the crime of speaking to the truckers, demonstrates the depths to which Trudeau’s Canada has sunk.
Here his son and brother beg for the help of all of us against this appalling human rights violation, not simply the trumped-up arrest but the terrible treatment the pastor is being subjected to in prison. You have to ask where are our human rights warriors now – why the silence when it comes to a Christian priest? Watch to the end for details of how you can give your support if you wish to.
