The Handmaid’s Tale, Britain 2018

Every Sunday thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of British women watch The Handmaid’s Tale on Channel 4. Now in its second series and far beyond the Margaret Atwood book, it depicts a dystopian future where women are raped and impregnated after a fertility collapse in an authoritarian Christian state that was formerly part of the US.

The second series is pretty grim and features women being abused and tortured. A devout and pious young girl who has been married off at 15 falls in love with another young man. Both she and her lover are executed. A particularly harrowing scene is the rape of the heavily pregnant Offred, the lead character, by the Commander while she is held down by his wife.

Yes, women in the UK watch this torture porn in their droves, some of them believing such a state of affairs is ‘just around the corner’ or at least coming to Trump’s America. (The employment rate for women in Trump’s evil dystopia, by the way, has rocketed.)

If viewers only took the time to look a little closer to home, they would see some British girls disappearing during the summer holidays to be raped and impregnated by a cousin in Pakistan so he can obtain a UK visa, as reported in the Times.

In fact things are so bad that the Home Secretary has launched an investigation into his department’s handling of ‘forced marriage cases’ (read that as rape and impregnation).

In this reality, this horror takes place here and now, on our doorsteps, where even very vulnerable young women are raped and impregnated for visas. The Times: ‘Women with severe learning disabilities are among those who have been raped and beaten after they were forced to marry abroad and their abusers were given visas.

‘The victims include a Muslim woman with “very little comprehension of anything other than simple matters” who was assaulted and made to have sex after marrying a Bangladeshi cousin. The man was issued with a spousal visa to join her in Britain even though officials knew that his wife was severely disabled, court records show.’

This is our nightmare right now: British women shipped overseas to be raped and abused by Bangladeshi cousins so that said cousin can get a British visa. Many go on to get British citizenship.

By the way, there are a disproportionate number of children with various disabilities in these communities because of the prevalence of first-cousin marriage.

Honour killings for falling in love with the wrong person, the rape and impregnation of young women and girls – you don’t have to read a work of fiction or watch it on TV to find it. This is Britain 2018.

I expect to see the feminists marching through the streets protesting about all this very soon. Just as soon as they finish watching the fictional Christian dystopia that is The Handmaid’s Tale.
