The happy family of TCW

I LOVE this site. I’ve been coming here for nigh on five years and it’s just as much fun now to engage either above or below the line as it was then. Well, to be honest, it took a year of reading the articles and comments to work up the nerve to add my own thoughts to the discussion. I didn’t start writing for the site until three years ago and that took a bit of courage too. To put your name out there and own what you’ve written is a nervy prospect, and especially when you’re writing in such esteemed company. I feel privileged that the editors of this site have given me, and other readers and commenters, a platform to express their own thoughts.

The best thing about this site, though, is the world it has opened. I’m not talking about the many excellent articles and the breadth of knowledge evident above and below the line, but the connections that have been created in the last five years. Many of us have become more than mere names on a screen. We have forged bonds, created friendships and some of us are in touch via email, Zoom and face to face. I have had the honour of meeting some of you who post below the line and fingers crossed, will continue to meet more of you in the future. Would we, could we have ever met without this site?

From what I read, others are keen to set up meets in their own areas and I very much hope they do. Talking here, debating and discussing here, is great but it is so much better in person.

Not only that. This site has become so important to so many people that it reaches across borders too. I am in touch, via email, with the wonderful Audre Myers, with whom I became friends on this site. Through her, I have become friends with fellow Americans D A Christianson (who posts here and has his own blogsite, NEO – Nebraska Energy Observer) and Tyler Cook, who reads and posts here and also has his own blogsite, The Portly Politico. Friends that I would never have made contact with had it not been for this wonderful site.

The last few years have been difficult and I don’t expect 2023 to be any better, but the time we have shared here is important. We are never alone when so many others share our thoughts. We can come here to read, to engage, to laugh, to bond. We are family at TCW and never has it been so important to strengthen these bonds as it is now.

With that, I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a renewed hope that we might actually see some change for the good in 2023.
