CHRYSTIA Freeland: student of Russian history, financial journalist, published author, Minister of International Trade, Minister of Foreign Affairs and now Minister of Finance and Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister. But who is this woman who has been tipped as the heir apparent to Prime Minister Trudeau?
During her student days, while on an exchange at Kiev University her work with New York Times reporter Bill Keller documented the Bykivnia graves, an unmarked mass grave site in Ukraine where the Soviet secret police NKVD had murdered tens of thousands of ‘enemies of the Soviet state’. As a result she was denied re-entry to the Soviet Union.
After spending ten years as a journalist, including a spell on the London Financial Times, she entered the Ottawa parliament in 2013 and swiftly rose through the ranks. Trudeau appointed her Minister of International Trade in 2015. In 2017 she was Minister of Foreign Affairs and two years later she was appointed Deputy Prime Minister. In 2020, after a Cabinet reshuffle by Trudeau, Freeland added Minister of Finance to her portfolio.
When Trudeau inevitably departs his successor will already have been anointed: Canada’s corporate media have already cast the deciding vote. The journalists who backed Trudeau are now writing of Freeland with the admiration and awe they once displayed at the boy wonder’s every statement. Freeland is also being touted by the New York Times as a successor to Jens Stoltenberg as Nato Secretary General. But what lies behind the media hype?
She has Ukrainian ancestry through her maternal grandparents and is a strong supporter of economic sanctions, including the removal of Russia from the Swift global payments network. Freedland was very close to her grandfather, who was described in the NY Times as ‘a grateful immigrant to Canada, as a younger man involved with a Ukrainian nationalist movement that saw the Nazis as useful foils to counter the Soviets’.
Freeland’s grandfather, however, was hardly a young man led astray. Mykhailo Chomiak was a high-level Nazi collaborator. From the beginning of 1940 to the early months of 1945, he served as managing editor of the only Ukrainian-language newspaper permitted to publish in Nazi-occupied Poland.
Whilst our grandchildren cannot be held responsible for our errors of judgement, Freeland has been ambiguous concerning her ancestry. According to her, the information that her grandfather was a Nazi-supporting anti-Semite was part of a Russian ‘disinformation campaign’. However, the Ukraine Archival Records in Alberta indicate without doubt that Chomiak was a Nazi collaborator. Freeland not only refuses to condemn the wartime activities of her maternal grandparents but endorses them. In 2015 she wrote an essay called ‘My Ukraine,’ stating that her Nazi collaborator grandparents ‘saw themselves as political exiles with a responsibility to keep alive the idea of an independent Ukraine’.
Along with Emmanuel Macron and Jacinda Arden, Freeland was a member of the WEF’s Young Global Leaders, described by Business Week as ‘the most exclusive private social network in the world’. Freeland now sits on the WEF Board of Trustees. The Board has real power within the organisation. According to the WEF, the ‘Board of Trustees, [is composed of] exceptional individuals who act as guardians of its mission and values, and oversee the Forum’s work in promoting true global citizenship’.
The plans of the WEF have been described as a ‘global reset’, particularly their vigorous support of the green revolution. Amongst their projects is the policing of the internet using artificial intelligence automatically to censor ‘misinformation’ and ‘hate speech’.
Freeland is not above using ‘misinformation’ herself. During Canada’s 2021 election she was hit with a ‘manipulated media’ tag on Twitter after her staff doctored a video of opposition leader Erin O’Toole to suggest he supported for-profit healthcare, a key dog whistle for her Liberal base amid fears of low turnout.
Freeland was wholeheartedly behind Trudeau’s use of the Emergencies Act against the protesting truckers earlier this year. As Finance Minister as well as Deputy Prime Minister, she said the truckers would have their bank accounts frozen and their insurance suspended. Banks also froze any accounts related to the protest. The Act was intended for national crises such as war when other laws would not suffice. Instead it was employed to silence those who would assert their rights against the Canadian government.
If you can judge people by the company they keep, it does not bode well. Freedland is a close friend of George Soros, who through his Open Society favours any proposal which will undermine the nation state, including moving one million ‘refugees’ into Europe annually for the foreseeable future. When Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban criticised Soros for this, Soros responded by confirming that the numerous groups he was funding were indeed working for the ends described by Orban.
Whatever the future brings, it seems that those with power are ensuring that the succession is guaranteed and the project will move inexorably on.
