These evil crimes are why we should lock ’em up

-

IN September, when commenting on the evil killing of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel at bedtime in her own home, I said, ‘A final word to the “lock ’em up brigade”. The thing about locking criminals up for a long time (the serious ones, the nasty ones) is that then they are not free to burst into the homes of little girls at bedtime to continue their gangland feud. If you lock up dangerous criminals they can sort out all their feuding in prison, where they should have plenty of time on their hands. Only then can the children have a peaceful bedtime story instead of being fatally shot in their own homes.’

We should all remember this when some bleeding-heart liberal tells you the prison population is ‘too high’. Another completely innocent woman was murdered by someone who should have been in jail. I don’t mean ‘should have been in prison if we lived in a morally sane society’. I mean the killer should have been in prison even by the abysmally low standards of Britain’s criminal justice system.

The Guardian explains: ‘The man who murdered Zara Aleena was ordered to be returned to prison two days before the attack, but was left free to hunt the law graduate before kicking and stamping her to death.

Zara Aleena, a court official, was followed, grabbed from behind, pulled from the street and dragged on to a driveway where Jordan McSweeney, 29, sexually assaulted and murdered her at 2am on June 26, 2022.

‘McSweeney committed the murder nine days after being released on licence from prison on June 17 for an earlier offence of robbery. However, the Guardian has learned, he had been recalled to prison two days before the attack and should not have been free.’ No, Jordan McSweeney should not have been free to murder, but he was free, and he was free because of choices and policy decisions made by moral cowards.

Let me explain this to you, dear reader. In this country, for most offences, the term of the sentence a criminal receives is not the time served in prison. Usually, the criminal serves only half the stated sentence and is then released on license. If he breaches the terms of the licence he can be recalled to prison. So, in reality, McSweeney, should have been in jail twice over – if we were a normal country and prisoners served their entire sentence, he would still have been in jail but he was released instead, as per legislation, I think passed by a previous Tory government.

However, as I said, even by our low standards McSweeney was supposed to be in jail and not pulling women off the street and sexually assaulting and murdering them, because he had been recalled to prison for breaching a term of his licence two days beforehand. Only some administrative or policing failing meant he was still free to roam around the streets of London, hunting women and destroying the rest of the life of Zara Aleena’s family. That’s how bad things are now. That’s how much our Tory government are ‘tough on crime’.

Now various internal inquiries have been launched, blah, blah, blah, it’s all more of the same.

Jordan McSweeney is exactly the type of person you expect on the streets these days and not in jail as he was a career criminal. You can be a career criminal nowadays and still not be in jail. In fact, you have to work very hard indeed to go to prison. ‘He had been convicted on 28 occasions for more than 69 previous offences including assaults on police, assaults on civilians, theft, burglary, racially aggravated offences and driving offences. One source said there was nothing in his criminal history flagging that he was a sexual danger to women.’ I think next time, that source should keep his or her mouth shut.

The Guardian reports details of how McSweeney was hunting for a woman to kill that night. Actually out hunting – this is what women have to deal with, and it was Zara Aleena who he targeted.

Zara Aleena was a hardworking woman going about her life. She had wanted to be a lawyer since the age of five and had a law degree from the University of Westminster. Since May, five weeks before her death, she had been working as an administrative officer at the Royal Courts of Justice in central London, and had previously worked to resettle refugees.

The details of her death were brutal: I will not repeat them here but you can read them in the media reports.

Zara Aleena’s family have said she ‘believed that a woman should be able to walk home’ in a moving tribute to ‘a beloved human, child, niece, cousin, granddaughter, friend to all’. The tribute described Aleena, who was a carer to her mother and grandmother, as ‘a joy to all of us’ and ‘our love in human form’, as well as friendly, with ‘a passionate spirit and indomitable energy’.

The family said: ‘She was authentic and refused to try and impress anyone but she impressed us. She was the rock of our family. Zara was stoic and held it all together and never complained. She glued our community together.’ The family added that ‘nobody worked harder’ than Aleena. ‘Zara was happy and at a point in her life when her joy was radiating and blossoming,’ the family said.

Zara Aleena was murdered because this government does not take crime seriously. She was murdered because for decades many in the mainstream media mocked people who think evil offenders should be behind bars and not pandered to as the ‘lock ‘em up brigade.’ Zara Aleena was murdered because spineless politicians like David Cameron didn’t want to be seen as nasty and mean but instead wanted to ‘hug a hoodie’. It’s happened before. It will happen again until the governing class start to take criminals and criminality seriously.
