All respect to Jacob Rees-Mogg. We have given him a hard time on The Conservative Woman before. Not least because in our (the TCW editors’) view he is the most able, independently thinking and moral politician of our times.
So when he appeared to have ‘bottled it’ in the past – in terms of standing up to the Government’s hapless Brexit negotiations with the EU – it was disappointing, if not depressing. If Jacob was going to lie low, who was there we could rely on to stand up for our nation state and our values?
He has waited, and he has given Mrs May his full support. Her stupidity and obstinacy was not to listen to him in the first place, not to invite this talented politician into her Cabinet ranks.
Well, her stubborn refusal to listen has come back to bite her.
Nothing could be more honourable or more momentous than his statement today explaining why he has written his letter to the chairman of the 1922 Committee asking for a vote of no confidence in Mrs May. It is an outstandingly confident and effective performance – and what a sharp contrast to the stumbling jargon-driven Mrs May earlier in Parliament.
Today Jacob Rees-Mogg has restored my faith in my country and democracy. We are fortunate to have him.
