THE world’s richest man, Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, has pledged $10billion (£7.7billion) to fight climate change. He will hand out grants to scientists, activists and ‘any effort that offers a real possibility to help preserve and protect the natural world’.
Mr Bezos has an estimated net worth of more than £100billion.
Critics say Amazon is a huge contributor to carbon dioxide emissions as it ships items around the world, and it recently threatened to fire staff who spoke out about the company’s role in climate change. There are also questions about Amazon’s tax contributions – in 2018 the firm paid £220million tax on UK revenues of £10.9billion – and the working conditions of staff.
Instead of backing green activists, should Mr Bezos address these issues? Discuss!
