IT’S a pithy slogan that many LibDems swore by … ‘Bollocks to Brexit.’ But now party leader Jo Swinson is under fire for quietly killing off the coarse catchphrase, with some members accusing her of being ‘prim and puritan’ and suffering ‘a sense of humour failure’.
The slogan was dreamed up under her predecessor Sir Vince Cable, finding its way on to car stickers and T-shirts. But since Miss Swinson took over in July, it’s faded from view. Party officials claim it was only ever intended as a ‘limited edition’ for last May’s European elections.
But one senior LibDem said it had caught the public mood and would have survived if Sir Vince was still in charge. ‘Yes, it was crude – but it was funny, for God’s sake,’ he added. ‘And you can’t argue it didn’t get the voters’ attention. Sadly, it’s been scrapped by killjoy Jo, who is not exactly renowned for her sense of humour.’ Another said: ‘I’m afraid it does feel that under Jo Swinson feminist puritanism is on the march in the party.’
So was the slogan witty and sophisticated, or crude and demeaning? Discuss!
