Today’s hot topic – sumfin’ dodgy in Dictionary Corner

IN its annual update, the Oxford English Dictionary has added ‘sumfin’, ‘summink’ and ‘sumthin’ as acceptable variations for ‘something’. Another addition is ‘whatevs’, defined as a ‘response to a question or statement to indicate that the speaker is disinclined to engage with, or is indifferent to the matter’.

We all know that the language is constantly evolving, but should a respected dictionary endorse sloppy and inaccurate usage, or should it make some attempt to maintain standards? Discuss!
