THE coffee chain Starbucks is launching a campaign to raise £100,000 for the transgender charity Mermaids via a special edition cookie.
At the same time it has beaten other top brands to win the Channel 4 Diversity Advertising Award, which brings £1million of free air time. Its winning ad, to be premiered tomorrow, shows a girl called Jemma who is transitioning to become a boy called James. She tries out the name for the first time at Starbucks, when an employee writes James on a cup and another calls it out.
A soft-focus BBC report says that Starbucks found out that several young people were using their cafes in the same way, prompting the partnership with Mermaids.
Should Starbucks be promoting transgenderism and should Channel 4 be giving them an accolade for doing it? Discuss!
