TWENTY fines are to be issued over the Downing Street lockdown parties, it was announced yesterday

They will come in the form of fixed penalty notices, which must be paid within 28 days, or contested.

Over recent weeks, the Ukraine War has served to take Partygate out of the headlines, and some in high places will be hoping news of the fines goes by relatively unremarked.

But, lest we forget, the country was crippled by the Covid lockdown rules that Boris Johnson and his cohorts ruthlessly imposed. Lives were disrupted, children deprived of schooling, businesses wrecked.

A year ago, the Queen sat alone at her husband’s funeral masked up for a lockdown the Prime Minister ordered, but clearly never believed in.

Most heartbreakingly, the frail and elderly were confined in care homes, deprived of their only comfort – visits by their family. Many died alone.

But in Downing Street, the corks popped and the partygoers sipped in the sunshine on the garden terrace or socialised over a snifter or two indoors. Meanwhile, outside the Bubble, millions were harangued and terrified into complying with the rules.

And the punishment for the No 10 cocktail crowd? A fixed penalty notice – the sort you might annoyingly find under your windscreen wiper. Not so much a party fine, more a parking fine.

The Metropolitan Police will not be saying who the culprits are.  Of course they won’t. We don’t expect such exalted personages to be named and shamed. That’s only for the plebs.

And so, once again, we are left exasperatedly asking the question: When will Boris ‘I Will Survive’ Johnson ever be called to account?
