THE Australian state of Victoria has entered a new lockdown after a grand total of 13 coronavirus cases (not necessarily illnesses) were identified in Melbourne.
The restrictions, planned to last five days, began at midnight on Friday night. At the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne, play between Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz was suspended in the fourth set at 11.30pm while fans left the arena, then continued in an empty stadium (Djokovic won). TV coverage earlier in the evening showed spectators sitting next to each other without masks. Apparently the virus was inactive until midnight.
The complete absence of logic in clearing fans out after they had been in close proximity for hours defies comprehension. The only possible explanation is that it was a demonstration of the power of Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews.
