Today’s talking point

YOU might say that Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng’s entreaty to us all to go vegan as a way to combat climate change is as daft as it comes. However these days we discount this government’s dark skies thinking at our peril. What seemed unimaginable yesterday – for example infinite lockdowns and mandatory vaccine passports – is all too real today.

Mr Kwarteng appears to be as morally compromised and selfish as his boss. Despite the Prime Minister’s latest ‘speeding up’ of emission reductions policy being met with the derision it deserves (see here and here), Kwarteng has the audacity to tell people poorer than himself that ‘lifestyle’ changes will be necessary to hit the Government’s emissions targets.

Stupid and sinister, this development represents another example of the country’s descent into totalitarianism. Not content with vaccine fascism, a government minister now wants to force vast swathes of the population into malnutrition and to drive the majority of farmers out of business, as the rightly outraged Allison Pearson and Julia Hartley-Brewer succinctly put it.
