Unchallenged and unhinged, the cult of Sturgeon

LOOKING on from south of the border at the machinations of Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, (or is it ‘Mother Scotland’ these days?) in her attempt to secure another independence referendum, one could be forgiven for thinking that a strange cult has engulfed part of the UK.

For that is the level of collective madness that pervades her party and supporters, together with the irrational and near-hysterical adulation of this woman from the MSM seemingly incapable or unwilling to challenge her over her abject policy failures during 12 years in government.

For a start, Sturgeon presides over a decrease in life expectancy, with the number of years people in Scotland can expect to live in good health falling during her tenure in office. Little wonder, given the maelstrom of incompetence and economic ineptitude that prevails north of the border. Yet still the majority English taxpayer is obliged to fund the extravagance of the block grant of some £41billion a year for 2022-2025, meaning that for every £100 per person the UK government spends in England on matters devolved to Scotland, Holyrood receives £126 per person.

There has also been a lamentable decline in the once-world-class Scottish education system. Against a backdrop of a widening attainment gap and falling standards in basic levels of literacy and numeracy, the SNP’s efforts at reform through the Curriculum for Excellence has come under increasing fire from educationists.

Meanwhile, the minority SNP government is propped up by the increasingly deranged Scottish Greens as they endeavour jointly to promote ‘the fullest possible democratic participation in Scotland’ as per the Draft Shared Policy Programme. As long as that ‘democratic’ participation embraces acquiescent voters – the majority of whom got it wrong in the 2014 Independence Referendum – and the participation of gullible, non-taxpaying 16-year-olds. The SNP promotes ‘a more equal society’ which includes ‘free bikes for all school children who can’t afford one’ and free breakfast and lunch for all primary school pupils all year round. Its ‘Greener Scotland’ programme promises to ‘double our world-leading Climate Justice Fund’ to a staggering £24million in the farcical race to accelerate Net Zero.

All this whilst Mother Scotland struts her stuff and jets about the place, including a trip to London for the Queen’s funeral where she proclaimed, Janus-like, her new-found Britishness whilst simultaneously trying to break Britain apart. A huge amount of taxpayers’ money is being lavished on her demand to settle the so-called ‘festering issue’ on whether Holyrood can hold another referendum on Scottish independence without Westminster’s approval. The rest of the UK are merely bystanders as one part of the country with a population roughly the size of Yorkshire demands to be given another opportunity to determine the future direction of the UK.

However, Sturgeon and her tin-eared cohorts ignore the more than one third of her supporters who don’t see her party’s policy of re-joining the EU as independence at all. She has very little to say to them.

Before her party’s conference Sturgeon retracted her assertion that she ‘detests’ the Tories, just their policies, though she refused to ‘regret’ her remark. That sort of inflammatory language might go down well with the party faithful but also displays the extent to which she and her disciples have become decidedly unhinged. Not to be outdone, Mhairi Black, the SNP’s Scotland spokesman at Westminster, reiterated the slur in the Commons. Which of course is music to the ears of the hate-filled, nationalist zealots who constitute certain parts of her party. They were to be found like a collective of Madame Defarges harassing delegates to the Scottish Tory Party Conference in Perth.

Some of us down south are clinging to the notion of a United Kingdom by our fingernails. We are fed up with constant carping, whinging and manufactured grievances which blame Westminster for the weather, even having to endure the historically regressive dirge of the ‘Scottish National Anthem’ whilst at the same time not allowed an English anthem of our own.

This is the strategy of the SNP, who have deliberately fostered a climate of fear and loathing to drive a wedge between themselves and their closest geographical neighbours.  If anything embodies the loss of respectful, balanced and nuanced debate it is to be found in the cult of Nicola Sturgeon and her baying rent-a-mob. They must not be allowed to succeed.
