In vision: Kathy Gyngell’s scorching letter to Michael Gove

ON Tuesday TCW published a searing open letter by our editor Kathy Gyngell to Cabinet minister Michael Gove, whom she has counted as a friendly acquaintance for about ten years

Written from the heart, the letter gave it to Gove straight: ‘I feel I have no choice but to write to you directly and publicly to say how appalled I am by your part in the government’s response to the Covid-19 virus which, in six months, has destroyed the country’s economic prospects, and turned us from a democracy into a dictatorship. For what? For a non-cure that is far worse than the disease.’

It concluded: ‘You need to take a long look at yourself and ask if you are happy to leave this appalling damage as your political legacy. You of all people should show the basic courtesy of honesty.’

Its honesty and forthrightness attracted an enormous amount of attention, and many TCW commenters thanked Kathy for putting into clear words exactly what they were thinking.

Among those who took an interest was the New Culture Forum, set up by Peter Whittle to defend Western culture from the nihilistic orthodoxies dominant in the media, academia and education. He asked Kathy to introduce and read her letter for the Forum’s YouTube channel.
