WELL, it’s happened. As reported here in the Epoch Times, a grand jury in Washington has approved felony charges against former President Donald Trump in connection with his efforts to dispute the results of the 2020 election and with the events of January 6, 2021.
The report says: ‘According to the indictment, Mr Trump faces four federal charges arising out of a probe by special counsel Jack Smith: conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy to deprive citizens the “free exercise” of constitutional rights. This is the second indictment arising from Mr Smith’s investigation. The former president is separately facing 40 counts relating to the alleged retention of classified documents at his home at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.’
Trump has described it as a politically motivated attack, which anyone who has followed the fallout from January 6, 2021, or viewed Epoch Times TV’s analysis of the documentary footage of the events outside the White House, The Real Story of January 6, is persuaded to be the case.
The 45-page indictment (pdf) charges Trump with a ‘conspiracy’ involving his efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 election. It says: ‘The purpose of the conspiracy was to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election by using knowingly false claims of election fraud.’ The indictment acknowledges that Trump has a First Amendment right to speak publicly about the election and claim that he won, but it alleges that he ‘pursued unlawful means of discounting legitimate votes and subverting the election results’.
While many compliant and trusting voters may choose to believe the Biden narrative that Trump’s January 6 protest rally and subsequent events were ‘an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy’, there are many, too, who believe Trump: that this is nothing less than a witch-hunt against him aimed at sinking his re-election chances. Even the FBI found scant evidence that the invasion of the Capitol was the result of an organised plot.
Trump is continuing undaunted with his Presidential campaign, and one cannot but think that this assault on him can only play into his hands. Trump is not a man to be broken – the deep state Democrats seem yet to understand their man. Every attack and every ‘defeat’ he not just pushes back on, but turns to his advantage.
